Hi my name is Mr. Alexander Scott Kaiser. I am an 18 year old totally blind Florham Park, New Jersey resident with other fine motor impairments who needs your help. I applied to the independence training program at the Colorado Center for the blind in Littleton, Colorado. However, the New Jersey commission for the blind rejected providing financial support for the training. However, they said the Joseph Kohn Rehabilitation Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey was providing equivalent levels of training. However, this statement is not true. The following information explains why the JKRC provides low end training versus the benefits of training at the Colorado Center for the blind.
At the Colorado Center for the blind students live in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with a roommate. This program usually lasts for six to nine months. Classes run from 8:00 A.M., to 4:30 P.M. Monday-Friday. At the CCB Orientation and Mobility classes are taught with the use of the long white cane and practice of the use of the Denver light rail train and bus system to navigate around the Denver metropolitan area. In O&M route planning is emphasized. At the CCB they also teach home management classes. In these classes students learn cooking, budgeting money, grocery shopping with a shopper?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s assistant, house cleaning, grilling, and self defense. At the CCB assistive technology classes are taught. In these classes, the use of job access with speech for windows screen reader , window eyes, the use of electronic note takers including the Pac Mate omni BX, the pacmate Omni QX, braille note BT, Braille Note QT, the icon Mobile manager, voice note, braille plus, braille sense, and voice sense are emphasized. At the CCB academic skills training is provided on the premises, this includes: writing classes, math classes, and science classes. At the CCB college prep classes are taught. At the CCB career preparation classes are also taught. This includes: what to put on a job application, how to write a resume, job shadowing, and how to dress for an interview. At the CCB Braille classes are taught. The levels of braille that are taught are uncontracted braille, contracted braille, braille music, nemeth braille for math and science, computer braille, and short-hand braille for note taking. At the CCB students go rock climbing, white water rafting, fishing, skiing, swimming, camping and canoeing wich build self confidence and social skills. At the ccb there are weekend travel trips to malls and amusement parks. At the CCB organizational skills are taught, which include labeling personal items, labeling toiletries, and labeling electronic items. At the ccb students learn how to navigate through the airport when traveling to the national Federation of the blind National Convention, as well as navigating through a hotel independently .
At the ccb philosophy classes are taught by blind role models talking about personal experiences.
At the Joseph Kohn Rehabilitation Center the training is low functioning and it only lasts for 16 weeks. At the JKRC orientation and mobility skills are only taught in JKrc local environments. At the JKRC philosophy classes are mainly focused on adjustment to blindness. In braille only basic braille reading and writing are taught. In technology classes only basic computer skills are taught. No electronic note taker use occurs at the JKRC. At the JKRC cooking is only taught once a week. At the JKRC there are no academic skills classes. At the JKRC students live in dom style housing and it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s not guaranteed that each student gets in to the transitional apartment. At the JKRC there is limited weekend travel. Can you please contact the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired to persuade them to pay for my training in Colorado?
