The Hospice Volunteer plays a pivotal role in the provision of services to patient and families. As the only non-paid team member in the program, they bring to the terminally ill and love ones a special kind of caring that comes from a desire to help and aid in comfort.
Often, we find that patients and families talk to the volunteer about matters they can’t or don’t share with any other team member. It can be wonderful bond that brings satisfaction to both parties.
Types of Volunteers that provide Services:
-Patient Family Services
-Office Services
-Community Services
-Bereavement
Volunteer Guidelines;
-Be a good listener. Be attentive to “leads about the patient’s interest areas”.
-Be yourself .It is your genuineness and ability to care that will come across to the patient and family.
-Realize that there is nothing wrong in the silence and silence builds trust.
-Don’t feel that you must know all the answers to the question to every problem.
-Volunteer should not discuss their own personal problems.

To ensure that all volunteers are equipped for the challenge of working with terminally ill patients. Hospice Care of the Valley requires that volunteers must complete extensive orientation and training sessions, as well as submit to a routine background check. It’s important that volunteers understand the history of hospice and are aware of the specific ways and responsibility to better serve the patients. Additional training is available and necessary.
